How Billing Works

The Exam Type Determines How You're Billed

Many patients are surprised to learn that it's not the insurance you have — it's the type of exam performed that determines how your visit is billed. A routine eye exam for glasses or contacts is billed to your vision plan. An exam addressing a medical condition is billed to your medical insurance.

When both apply, you may be able to use both benefits — medical insurance for the exam and your vision plan for eyewear. We'll help you navigate this at your visit.

Important: The type of exam performed, not the insurance you have, determines how the visit is billed. Vision plans cannot be used for medical care. Standard copays, deductibles, and coinsurance may apply.

Important Notes

  • The type of exam performed — not the insurance you carry — determines billing.
  • Vision plans cannot be used for medical eye care (e.g., infections, glaucoma).
  • If your exam is billed to medical insurance, you can still use your vision plan benefits for glasses or contacts.
  • Standard copays, deductibles, and coinsurance apply based on your plan.
  • Please bring your insurance cards to every appointment.
