What Does 20/20 Vision Actually Mean?

November 2022 Dr. Brandon Harnos 4 min read

Most people assume 20/20 means perfect vision. It doesn't — and understanding what it actually measures explains why annual eye exams matter even when you think you see fine.

The Definition of 20/20

The notation "20/20" means: at 20 feet, you can resolve what a person with statistically normal vision can resolve at 20 feet. It measures distance clarity — specifically, the ability to read high-contrast letters at a standardized distance under controlled lighting. 20/20 is not the best possible vision — many people see 20/15 or 20/10.

What 20/20 Does Not Measure

Why This Matters

The "20/20 = healthy eyes" belief leads people to skip exams because they think they see fine. This is precisely when serious conditions go undetected. An eye exam evaluates the health and function of your entire visual system — the chart is one small piece of it.

Whether your vision is 20/20 or not, annual comprehensive exams matter. Schedule yours at Harnos Optometry in New Paltz.
