Scleral Lenses in New Paltz, NY: Premium Vision for Irregular Corneas

August 2024 Dr. Scott Morrison 6 min read

For patients with irregular corneas, severe dry eye, or conditions that make standard lenses inadequate, scleral lenses are often transformative. We specialize in fitting these precision instruments at Harnos Optometry.

What Are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid gas-permeable lenses that vault completely over the cornea and land on the sclera (the white of the eye). The space between lens and cornea is filled with preservative-free saline — creating a smooth liquid optical surface and a continuously moist environment that standard lenses cannot replicate.

Who Benefits Most

Keratoconus patients: The most common scleral lens indication. Sclerals replace the irregular cone surface with a perfect spherical optic, providing dramatically sharper vision than glasses or soft lenses allow.

Post-surgical corneas: After LASIK, PRK, or corneal transplant, irregular surfaces make standard lenses inadequate. Sclerals neutralize the irregularity.

Severe dry eye: The liquid reservoir continuously bathes the ocular surface. Many patients who cannot wear any other lens wear sclerals comfortably for 12+ hours daily.

Our Fitting Process

We use digital corneal mapping and OCT imaging to characterize your corneal shape, then select and systematically adjust diagnostic lenses across multiple visits. We work with 30+ scleral lens designs from specialty laboratories — giving us the breadth to accommodate the full range of corneal conditions.
