How Often Should Children Have Eye Exams? A Guide for Hudson Valley Families

June 2023 Dr. Elaine Doxtader 5 min read

Children rarely complain about their vision — they assume what they see is normal. That's why scheduled eye exams, not symptom-driven visits, are essential throughout childhood.

The Recommended Schedule

Why School Screenings Aren't Sufficient

School vision screenings detect approximately 30-40% of vision problems — primarily those affecting distance acuity. They miss farsightedness entirely (farsighted children often pass distance charts easily), eye teaming and tracking problems, amblyopia until it's significant, and all conditions unrelated to distance clarity. A passing result on a school screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive exam.

What We Look For at Each Stage

In infants and toddlers, we prioritize eye alignment and early detection of amblyopia-causing conditions. In school-age children, we assess binocular vision skills — eye teaming, tracking, and focusing — that directly affect reading fluency. In teenagers, myopia management becomes primary.
