Eye Safety
Every year around Independence Day, emergency rooms see a surge in firework-related eye injuries. Many result in permanent vision loss. Nearly all are preventable with basic precautions.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports approximately 10,000 fireworks-related emergency room visits annually. Eye injuries account for a disproportionate share — and are among the most severe, including corneal lacerations, ruptured globes, and burns. The majority of injuries come from consumer fireworks, not professional displays.
Sparklers are often considered safe — the firework given to children. They are not. Sparklers burn at up to 1,200°F — hot enough to melt gold. A sparkler held at a child's arm level is at eye level for a toddler nearby. Burns from sparklers account for a significant share of firework injuries in young children.
Do not rub the eye. Do not apply pressure. Cover gently with a clean cloth without pressure and go to an emergency room immediately. Eye injuries from fireworks are true emergencies — timing directly affects visual outcomes.
