How to Choose Eyeglass Frames That Actually Work for Your Face

September 2024 Dr. Brandon Harnos 5 min read

A good pair of glasses should do two things: help you see and look like they were made for you. With over 600 frames in our optical, the choice can feel overwhelming. Here's how we think about it.

Start With Face Shape — But Don't Let It Trap You

The classic advice is to match frame shape to face shape: round frames for angular faces, angular frames for round faces, and so on. This is a reasonable starting point, but experienced opticians know it's more of a guideline than a rule. The best frame is often the one that surprises you — the shape you wouldn't have reached for on your own.

What matters more than matching geometric categories is proportion. Frames should be proportional to your face — not dramatically wider or narrower than your temples, not so deep they touch your cheeks, not so small they look perched on your face.

The Fit Points That Actually Matter

Prescription Considerations

Your prescription significantly affects which frames are appropriate. High minus prescriptions (strong nearsightedness) create thick edges in larger frames — smaller, rounder frames reduce edge thickness and look more refined. High plus prescriptions (strong farsightedness) magnify the eyes and create thick centers — smaller frames and high-index lens materials help minimize this effect.

If you're getting progressive lenses, you need frames with sufficient vertical lens height — typically at least 28-30mm. Short, narrow frames don't accommodate the reading zone adequately.

Frame Materials

Acetate is the most common material for fashion frames — rich colors, patterns, and a substantial feel. It adjusts well and holds its shape. Titanium is remarkably lightweight and hypoallergenic — ideal for patients who find acetate heavy or have metal allergies. TR-90 (flexible nylon) is durable and comfortable, often used in sport and children's frames.

The Role of Our Opticians

Our opticians have curated a collection of over 600 frames from independent and designer brands — Etnia Barcelona, Tom Ford, Garrett Leight, Silhouette, Lool, and more. They're trained not just to help you find something you like today, but something you'll still love in two years. Come in knowing your lifestyle — how active you are, whether you're at a desk all day, whether you want one pair or two — and let us help with the rest.
